What is a Developmental Support Worker?
Developmental Support Workers (DSWs) are at the core of our service delivery. They work directly with the individuals we care for, providing prescribed support and supervision, while helping residents be as independent as possible. Developmental Support Workers help residents by encouraging and facilitating involvement in recreational and educational activities, household chores, and money management. They advocate on the resident’s behalf and maintain homes so they are clean, safe, and hazard free.
At Momentum, we follow the standards for this field of work set forward by the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP), which has identified a set of competencies for Developmental Support Workers, and we use these as our guide when we hire new employees to join our team. The work of our DSWs is conducted within a code of ethics, also developed by NADSP, to ground the work of frontline support workers in providing care to persons with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.
